A morning routine is essential to start a productive day. But before we jump into why, does this sound like you?

The warm sun gradually streams through your bedroom curtains, your iPhone alarm begins to obnoxiously blare from under the fluffy pillow you’ve been snuggling all night. After pressing snooze at least three times, thrashing violently in the bed for five minutes straight, and contemplating excuses you tell your boss, you finally surrender.

For the next (embarrassingly long amount of time), you scroll aimlessly through your Instagram discovery feed until, “shit!” You’ve now got exactly fourteen minutes to drag your ass out of bed, throw some clothes on, and get out the door.

Sound familiar?

It might, if you don’t yet have a morning routine.

The fact is that how you start each day influences the productivity of the entire rest of the day. And when left to our own devices, the morning can easily become a gapping black hole of wasted time.

One minute you’re catching up on all the Whatsapp group chat gossip you missed overnight, the next minute you realize you’ve wasted literally the entire morning.

But what if you woke up each morning prepared and ready to start a productive day? You knew exactly all the tasks you wanted to achieve during your morning routine instead of leaving them to chance?

With a morning routine you could plan, manage, and track your success each day. You’d be able to start every morning with the confidence that everything is sorted and set yourself up to productively breeze through the day. Additionally, your morning routine would help you build self-discipline, character, and makes you a better human. #winning

I recently organized my daily morning routine. Check out how I start each day; you just may find some ideas to steal for yourself.

What is my daily morning routine?

1. Wake up at 6:30 AM

Waking up early helps you to develop a sense of discipline. In addition, it makes you feel good to be up early. While everyone is still sleeping, you get a head start on the day.

Duration: 5 seconds

2. Make the bed!

Growing up, I was that smart ass questioning my mother, “what’s the point of making the bed if I’m just gonna mess it back up again?”

Making your bed every morning is a simple win to set you up for the many more wins to come later in the day. In addition, it feels great to jump into a made bed at night after a long day, doesn’t it? Mom might have been on to something after all.

Duration: 5 min

3. Hydrate

Drink 1 large full glass of lemon water. After sleeping for 7+ hours, your body could use a boost of hydration upon waking up. Adding a slice of lemon helps detoxify the body, and helps skin look radiant.

Duration: 5 mins

4. Workout

Working out first thing in the morning as opposed to in the afternoon or evening helps boost energy levels, and will help you sleep better at night. In addition to keeping legs toned, calves popping, butt perky, arms flab-free, and tummy on fleek, exercise keeps you flexible and heart strong.

5. Meditate

Start the day with a clear and relaxed mind. Meditation sets a tone of calm for the entire day.

6. Complete affirmations & review vision board

Morning affirmations help to reaffirm a positive state of mind. Doing so help to remind you why you’re waking up in the first place and helps to put everything in perspective.

Personally, I like to review my vision board as well.

7. Complete morning toilette routine

Just a fancy French way of saying your morning shower and pampering.

Duration: 15 mins

8. Dress up

Dress every day how you want to be addressed. Put on your best clothes and favorite perfume, because every day is a “special day”.

9. Eat nourishing breakfast & prepare lunch

Eating a healthy breakfast will boost your energy for physical activity while supporting concentration and performance at work. Nourish your body with healthy, fresh, prepared food.

While you’re already in the kitchen, you might as well prepare for lunch as well. This will save you time later as lunch will be ready and waiting.

Duration: 15 mins

10. Quick tidy up

Cleaning is a lot less of a chore when you keep up throughout the week. Spend a short amount of time tidying daily to ensure your space is always nice and neat.

I literally set an alarm, so I don’t get carried away.

Duration 10 mins

11. Begin workday promptly by 8:00 AM & eat the frog

As an entrepreneur or freelancer, having a set work time helps to develop discipline.

Mark Twain once said, “if the first thing you do in the morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the rest of the day knowing the worst is behind you.” Your frog is your most important task and should be done first thing in the morning.

  1. Create an outline of your to-do list for the day
  2. Prioritize the Top 3 Items. Prioritize these by what tasks need to be done, rather than what tasks you want to do.
  3. Out of the top 3 items, choose the worst one. The one you’re not at all looking forward to doing. This is the one you will do first.
  4. Then choose your favorite, and easiest task. This is the one you will end with.

Duration: 1 hour

What do you not do each morning?

Just as important as acknowledging what must be done, here are some actions not to be done each morning!

  • DO NOT hit snooze on that alarm clock.
  • DO NOT check phone, email, social media notifications before all morning tasks are complete.
  • DO NOT start work before all tasks are complete.

Morning Routine Tips

To help make your morning routine stick, make it real. Print your morning routine and frame in your bedroom (or bathroom) somewhere you’ll see it every day. It’s harder to forget if you have to walk past it every day.

To keep your routine organized and help you stay on top of things, I like to use Asana. This is what my Asana Morning Routine looks like. You can also use popular app Trello, or Productive to do the same.
