Wondering if Backmarket.com is legit and if BackMarket is safe to buy a refurbished phone? Just some weeks ago, I was in the same predicament as you.

After shattering both the front and back of my 4-year-old iPhone, it was finally time to get an upgrade. While looking for where to buy a used iPhone or where to buy a refurbished iPhone, I stumbled upon BackMarket.com but wondered, is BackMarket legit? I too was skeptical of the website. After all, I didn’t want to get scammed or be sold a lemon of a phone.

After watching enough BackMarket reviews on Youtube and reading a few as well, I decided to go ahead and give BackMarket a try. Just two days after ordering my iPhone from BackMarket, it arrived on my doorstep.

To help others that may be wondering is BackMarket legit? Or is BackMarket a scam, I recorded a BackMarket review and unboxing video that you can watch just below. As I mention in my review video, I also found a BackMarket Promo Code or BackMarket Coupon Code that you can use to save some cash.

My BackMarket review — are they legit?

Below you will find a transcript of my BackMarket Review video.

What was that website that got shut down because they were selling drugs and murder for hire services and prostitution? Backpage.com. It kind of sounds like backpage.com.

My name is Jenaae Jackson and I am a blogger and digital marketer. In this BackMarket review, I’m going to be unboxing with you a brand new iPhone. Well, it’s not a brand new iPhone, it’s a refurbished iPhone that I bought from a website that I had never heard of before called backmarket.com. So let’s see what’s inside this box.

So, why a refurbish iPhone?

So several months ago, I dropped my iPhone 8 Plus. The entire back of the phone was shattered to pieces. So unfortunate, it looks terrible. And there are actually pieces of glass falling out of the phone.

So, I just put a case on it and rolled with it. Because with the case on, you could not see at all that the phone was broken. And the glass wasn’t falling out. But then a couple of months after that I dropped the phone again and shattered the front of the screen.

So at that point, I was like, okay, I can either pay to have the glass fixed in the front and the back, or I can just upgrade and get a new phone. I figured to fix the front and the back of the phone probably would be about $100 for each side. So at least $200 to fix the phone. Or I can maybe invest like 1000 bucks and get a new iPhone. The problem was I really didn’t want to invest $1,000 in a new iPhone. It’s like a car, you drive it off the lot and it immediately loses its value. Anyways, I digress.

I had this iPhone when it first came out, which was 2017. We’re now in 2021, so I’ve had this phone for about three, four years. And honestly, if it weren’t broken, I would keep going with it. I’m not the kind of person that I need to always have the latest and greatest iPhone.

I also don’t like to give my money away to big retail companies like Apple and T Mobile. I would much prefer to keep that money in my bank account, invest it, use it to build my business, use it to do whatever I want, so long as I’m not giving it away to Apple. Apple, you have enough of my money.

Discovering BackMarket.com…

I was first looking on Facebook marketplace to get a used iPhone. But honestly, I mean, I don’t know, I was a little bit distrustful to buy a used iPhone from a random person on Facebook. I feel like something like a phone, I would prefer to have it come from a company where I know it’s refurbished, it’s been tested. And it can be a little bit more reliable to last me another three, four years.

I stumbled upon backmarket.com. And initially, I was like, backmarket.com that sounds like some kind of what was that website that got shut down because they were selling like drugs and murder for hire services and prostitution?

Backpage.com! It kind of sounds like backpage.com.

And I was just like I don’t want to buy anything from backmarket.com. But the website looked pretty legit. The prices were definitely very attractive. So I was like you know what, let me go ahead and just give this company a try.

My experience buying from BackMarket.

So I went ahead and ordered a refurbished iPhone XS, I think I got the XS, and I paid like 200 and something dollars for it and excellent condition. Brand new this phone is about $1,000. So I literally saved myself with taxes and everything over $700 on a new iPhone.

I’m sure this will do the job if there’s not like a brick in here. Or who the hell knows from backmarket.com. So let’s go ahead and get this thing open and see what’s inside.

Firstly, it came really, really fast. I placed the order literally two days ago and it came FedEx two-day express shipping right to my door very, very fast. And it comes from Electronic Deals Back Market in Brooklyn, New York. Cool.

Okay, so here’s the iPhone X, its 64 gigabytes fully unlocked, which means that you can use it with any carrier. And with taxes and everything, I actually paid $331. So let’s go ahead and open it up.

What was in the box and the condition of the refurbished iPhone…

And it does come with an iPhone cord as well as an adapter. It’s beautiful, it’s stunning. It looks really nice. You can see on the side that there are some like little scratches, but they’re not even… Like you cannot feel the scratches, they’re just like on the surface. You can tell that whoever had this phone before they had a good case on it.

So there are some little cosmetic things, but the screen is perfect. There’s no scratches on the screen, so they obviously had a screen protector. And yeah, it looks really good. It’s in immaculate stellar condition. As I said, just some little tiny cosmetic scratches that are not deep scratches at all. That’s going to be covered when you put a case on the phone anyway.

So let’s go ahead and get this phone started up.

Is it charged? Yeah, it’s charged. So hello, it’s a standard iPhone startup screen. I’m going to go ahead and get the phone set up … Welcome to iPhone. All right, swipe up to get started. So now what I’m going to do is I’m going to turn this phone off. I’m going to turn this phone off as well and switch the SIM card from my old phone into the new phone and then I should be good to go.

I also got a case for it the other day while I was out so let me go and grab that too.

So let’s just test and make sure the basic features are working properly. If I unlock it or if I lock it, when I go to unlock it, Face ID works perfectly. Go to the camera, allow while using App.

“Hey guys, you like my new iPhone?…” The camera looks beautiful.

Is BackMarket.com legit?

From my experience, yes, backmarket.com is legit. The phone looks good. It’s clean. It’s nice. Perfect, exactly as advertised. The camera works. The speaker works. Check back and I’ll write a little review of how the BackMarket iPhone is going. But I’m very, very happy.

I’m glad that I saved all of those hundreds of dollars by buying a refurbished phone on Back Market and not getting a brand new one from Apple.

No they are complete frauds… they sell what is claimed to be certified refurbished which it is not… they also don’t honor their warranty… they sell items with corrupted software

    • Jenaae Jackson says:

Hasn’t been my experience, but thanks for sharing yours. Also, keep in mind there are different independent vendors on the site. So you cant lump them all as one…

  • Patrick Bangs says:

Just opened my cell phone and it arrived damaged i was offered 20$ to keep it!!!! I paid for the excellent phone and was given the fair one.

    • Jenaae Jackson says:

Yikes, sorry to hear you had that experience. Who was the individual Backmarket seller in your case?

  • Becky Riddle says:

I purchased a refurbished phone from Back Market on 2/19/22. There was also the offer to trade in my old phone for a refund which was convenient so I signed up for that too. I got the phone and it was perfect. I then sent in the old phone, and after Back Market confirmed that it was in pristine condition they sent an email with a form to fill out for the return. I was shocked to see that not only were they asking for my bank account number, but they asked for the last digits of my social security number – which is NOT needed to transfer money to someone’s account. There is also zero information in their Ts&Cs that this information would be required. I responded to multiple emails asking me to complete the form for that returb that I was not going to give them that info and to please just send a check, use an alternate electronic payment method (Paypal, Venmo Apple Pay, refund my credit card, etc.) or simply return the phone. After about 6 emails, none of which received a response, I called customer service. I explained the situation and the call center representative in India hung up on me. Not the kind of company you want to be dealing with.

It’s scary to think about the total amount of information they would have after a return: your name, address, email address, phone number, bank account number and the last 4 digits of your social security number. A big database of that information would definitely be worth some money – perhaps someone’s retirement plan?

I disputed the refund amount with my bank, but want to warn other potential customers. If you want to trade in your phone, I would highly recommend you do it elsewhere.

    • Jenaae Jackson says:

I have ordered two phones with them now and I have only had good experiences with Backmarket. Btw this review is not sponsored by them and totally honest. Nevertheless, thanks for sharing your personal experience.

  • Nikki Haynes says:

Hi my name is Nikki!! So happy to see your blog about back market. I have been debating for months about buying a phone from that website. After reading your blog I am going to give it a shot!!!!
    Thx so much!!!!

  • Garrick says:

AVOID BackMarket. They sent me a phone that’s not even inspected, much less refurbished. I got a phone with a camera that doesn’t work at all. Zero focus, no matter what. When I FINALLY got a reply via email from their “team”, they wanted me to take pics of the return box to send send it back. Um. . .with what? Then they offered me a 10% off promo code to buy another phone from them to use while they “process” my return. No thanks. Stay away. Far, far away from Backmarket.

    • Jenaae Jackson says:

Damn, sorry you had a bad experience. Remember its a market place.. So maybe you had a bad vendor… But usually Backmarket should step in on your behalf to make sure youre satisfied as a customer.

Also to be fair, taking a picture is a reasonable request to avoid people trying to scam Backmarket or their vendors. If you didn’t have a phone, surely you could borrow someone else’s or even go into a tech store (like an apple store) just to get this done.

  • Vonnie Owens says:

Jenaae, thank you so much for taking time to do this post. I am an older woman(63) who is nowhere near being educated in today’s modern technology of computing so its extremely helpful to me to be able to read something as easy as 123abc when trying to understand anything to do with smartphones. People like you are Godsends for people like me! I am getting ready to order a phone and wasn’t sure about back market but I’ve read many good reviews from purchasers of back market products. But your post has definitely set me at ease with going forward with my order. I will be doing that as soon as I finish with this responding. I just had to take the time ( quite lengthy for me, as I said computer illiterate, I’m not a typer, I’m a pecker. lol) because you were so thorough in detailing your purchase. I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you. For taking the time to do so for I know there are many more of us “old school” folks out here that get our knowledge of phones and computers from our grandchildren! even our great grandchildren sometimes! haha! And thank you ahead for the promo code. I will definitely try to use it, as I live from a very limited, very inadequate income!! He older generation like myself would be totally lost & vulnerable without people like yourself to take the time to enlighten people of your experience. Thank you again and God bless!!!

    • Jenaae Jackson says:

Sure thing. This has just been my honest experience with the company, and their customer service is very responsive, so if something doesn’t workout you can always return your item.

  • Gee Flat says:

Baclarket never sent my phone and took my money. They asked that I filed police complaint, Which I did not then said I didn’t put the IMEI number on it I could not have had as I never received the phone. They just invented all sorts of reasons not to refund me. Avoid these dishonest people like the plague.

    • Jenaae says:

Thats crazy. I have ordered multiple items. Even returned something last week with no issues. Sorry that happened to you.
